Fans of Ingmar Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage cannot help but be thrilled at the idea of a sequel from the great filmmaker, who is now almost 87. Yet those expecting Scenes redux may be disappointed; Bergman has never been one to run in place. When we last saw Marianne (Liv Ullmann) and Johan (Erland Josephson), they had ended their marriage.
This film opens with Marianne telling the camera that she wants to see Johan after 30 years and ends up exploring the generational conflicts with the couple's children rather than marital ones. Like the original, this film was originally produced for television, but the film seems far deeper and more complex than any TV movie.
