The crew of the Survivor has something to prove. They've entered the 2,250-mile TransPac Race from Los Angeles to Hawaii as neophyte yachting underdogs. Going head to head with 39 other vessels, they are dogged by the ominous swells of Hurricane Delores most of the way. Oh yeah, and the crew is made up entirely of HIV-positive gay men. As a dramatic documentary, the movie is too choppy, with scenes cutting off as abruptly as the waves that bash the hull.
Beyond a few cursory glances, we never really get to know the crew as individuals. But as a testament to the indomitability of the human spirit, the film succeeds splendidly. Do they win the race? That depends. For the "Survivors" (along with millions battling the long odds of HIV), the real finish line is not yet in sight.
