Cross The Matrix with The Terminator, add a smidgen of characteristically sweet Japanese innocence and you've got the makings of Returner. Set in the future, the dwindling human race is battling an alien horde for bragging rights to the last outpost of civilization--a rock outcropping in Nepal. That's when plucky heroine Anne Suzuki travels back in time to change history and prevent the extinction of humans.
Aided by Takeshi Kaneshiro, a street-smart gunman with Neo-like moves, she battles extraterrestrials and the Yakuza...with extended saccharine lapses into Hello Kitty territory. It's fine and all, but this movie feels so stitched together you can't help but long for the real thing while watching it. No real reason to plug in here.
