Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Avast, there be no curse on this film, mateys, as this flick may just be the buried treasure of the summer-blockbuster season. A film based on a ride may seem like a recipe for disaster, but this tale of heavily mascaraed Johnny Depp, a pirate without a ship (though he does have a conscience...awww), is totally fun. Depp wants to rescue the lovely Keira Knightley from the clutches of vile captain Geoffrey Rush, who left Depp for dead on a deserted island.
There's a lot to look at, including Depp, Knightley, hunky pirate Orlando Bloom and some bone-chilling effects. The film succeeds, because its tongue is firmly planted in cheek--even poking fun of its namesake Disneyland ride--and its mayhem is more comedic than macabre.
