This vanilla comedy is like The Karate Kid with a midlife crisis, as Tim Allen plays a schmo in need of some home and work improvement. Recently divorced and passed over (again) for a job promotion, things go from bad to worse when office bully Patrick Warburton gut-punches Allen in front of his young daughter. Allen demands a rematch and begins martial-arts training with washed-up B-movie action star Jim Belushi (what, Steven Seagal wasn't available?).
Suddenly, everybody's noticing the former nobody, even if Allen's budding romantic interest, Julie Bowen, disagrees with his new studly self. Joe sports a few funny sequences, and Allen and Bowen have a sweet chemistry (if you can ignore their Michael Douglas-Catherine Zeta-Jones age difference). Fans of Allen's safe, everyguy humor will get down with it, but most of this fluff stuff packs a pretty weak punch.
