In This World

This World is sure a long way from the good times found in director Michael Winterbottom's 2001 rager 24 Hour Party People. It's thousands of miles to be exact, as this documentary-looking movie follows two Afghan refugee cousins (Jamal Udin Torabi and Enayatullah) fleeing to London. Although the story is fictional, Winterbottom uses real people, a small filming crew, available light and digital cameras to create a raw story as the duo narrowly escape wary border guards and duplicitous smugglers and cram themselves into air-sapped containers for transport.
The camerawork offers a blunt portrait of the trip and the hardened landscapes they cross, while the bleakness of it all is only undercut by a lush score. This moving tale will totally trip you out.
