In this testosterone-charged screen adaptation of David Rabe's play, Penn and Spacey play a dysfunctional odd couple sharing office space. They're dealmakers in the entertainment biz--and rivals for the affections of Wright--but mostly they just hang out, snort coke, banter about love, fate and destiny, and keep an eye on their mercurial buddy, Palminteri.
Ryan and Shandling are oddballs on the fringe of the trio's edgy friendship, while Paquin is a piquant addition as a teenage couch potato who nonchalantly turns tricks. The performances are strong all around and the tumultuous portrait of Hollywood caricatures rings true, even if the plot flounders at times.
