Better not say anything too bad about this one, or Gene Hackman might kick our asses on the sidewalk. Luckily, we don't have to do any dissin', since writer-director David Mamet's punchy caper has Hackman delivering blow after blow of spiked dialogue that's as quick as the many plot twists. Hackman's a retired theif wrapped up with feisty fence Danny DeVito for one more job with an equally tangled crew of comrades: Delroy Lindo, Ricky Jay and Rebecca Pidgeon.
The lines of loyalty and love get blurred as the gold heist goes down, and the viewers are forced to keep a close eye on the constant switcheroos. Yeah, things spiral out of control toward the bloated ending, but the film's wonderfully barbed nature keeps this sting sharp.
