There are more than mussels and garlic simmering in the kitchen at Gigino, a trendy trattoria in Tribeca. Owner Danny Aiello has to deal with son Edoardo Ballerini, the restaurant's egotistical superchef, and Oz's Kirk Acevedo, a sous chef with a self-destructive gambling habit. Director Bob Giraldi takes us inside the restaurant for one spectacular night, boiling over with arrogant and condescending diners and waiters and talented cooks trying to maintain the organized chaos.
As if that's not enough, Aiello--a superb actor who has never really gotten his due--is dealing with the grief of a murdered partner while fending off hoodlums lookin' to own a piece of the restaurant. The food presentations, especially a lobster dish served to bratty food critic Sandra Bernhard, are as impressive as the character developments. Bravo to Giraldi for turning the restaurant business into one of the year's most memorable nights out. Now, let's eat!
