The premise is strictly Urban Folklore 101: College bunkies teetering on the verge of academic failure due to extracurricular activities (sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll) learn that if a student commits suicide, his or her roommates score straight A's. So our two heroes seek out the most perishable roomie possible. Director Cohn and company aim for a kind of Fast Times at Ridgemont High--the college years--vibe, although considering the skimpy character development and dark subject matter, they would've fared better with a megadose of black humor, à la Heathers.
But the movie hits its mark with amusing sketches of campus life and earnest acting from Scott and Gosselaar. Their characters might not pack much substance, but they're laughable and likable enough to earn a passing grade.
