You think you had it tough being a young person in love? Try being caught in this triangle. Two Taiwanese teenage girls (Lun-Mei Guey and Shu-Hui Liang) are best friends. That is, until Bo-Lin Chen comes along. Tall, cute, mature and kind, he becomes Liang's fantasy boyfriend. But he's falling for her friend, Guey, who's falling for, well, Liang.
Phew! Thankfully the camera lingers on the small moments of this otherwise peaceful summer to capture the trio quietly wrestling with their conflicting feelings. The struggle to figure out sexual identity, the possibilities of real friendship between boys and girls and the meaning of love are given a dignity not seen in most teenage love stories. And that makes this gentle, bittersweet, intelligent movie one of the best foreign films of this year.
