There are ghosts in the machine. But, of course, Tony Shalhoub and Shannon Elizabeth realize this too late when they inherit a gadgety mansion from crazy uncle (and ghost hunter) F. Murray Abraham. In this high-tech remake of the 1960 William Castle thriller, the house is run on the spirits of imprisoned apparitions that are, well, pissed off and want to kill people.
With help from psychic Matthew Lillard (who has enough manic energy to run a small city) and spirit saver Embeth Davidtz, the family sets out to escape the abode. It looks outta this world, and the Caspers are creatively creepy, but the original threadbare story still has too many design flaws and the star power's but a flicker. Even the gory money shot of an evil lawyer getting slo-mo sliced in half comes way too early in the story. If you're trying to harness some Halloween spirit, hunt elsewhere.
