The Battle of Shaker Heights

For all you Project Greenlight fans hoping this movie is a total train wreck (like the last one), you're out of luck. The likeable but odd Shaker Heights works not because the annoying rookie directors knew what they were doing (they didn't) but because the 16-year-old star Shia LaBeouf carries the film like an old pro (and, thankfully, the much discussed group-hug scene has been taken out).
There are parts where this coming-of-age love story just sits there and does nothing, but LaBeouf shines when it counts, and his quirky appeal, as he tries to get the girl (Amy Smart), makes him worth rooting for. He single-handedly wins any victory for this Battle.
