Talk about a blast from the past.
At last night's Emmys (you were following along, right?), we couldn't help but notice some familiarity when it came to the many (read: many, many) various hairstyles to hit the red carpet.
In a day and age where regularly copping "vintage" styles and regurgitating them "the cool-girl way" is the norm, it's especially rare to see 'dos paying a direct homage to their OG roots.
With that said, let the time traveling begin.
1920s
In the 1920s, a woman deciding to cut her hair was serious business (to put things plainly: Long hair was considered feminine, and short hair just wasn't). So when we saw Taraji P. Henson step out on stage in a straight bob (styled by celeb hairstylist Kim Kimble), we were immediately transported to a time where Louise Brooks was still gracing the world with her iconic presence (and cropped cut) on the silver screen.
1930s
The 1930s were all about the finger wave. Thanks to the fact that silent films were being replaced with sound, this era was dubbed the Golden Age of Hollywood, and all eyes were on silver-screen sirens like Greta Garbo and Bette Davis. It didn't take long for the decade's signature hairdo to be replicated by housewives across the nation. Clearly, the style isn't going anywhere—just look at how perfectly Natasha Lyonne's hairstylist Bobby Eliot executed it.
1940s
Come the 1940s, World War II had begun and ended, women were starting to work, and the film industry was booming. Made popular by starlet Veronica Lake, the peek-a-boo bang was a popular, super-stylish hairdo of that time—and Emmy Rossum copped that style last night, thanks to celeb hairstylist Giannandrea.
1950s
Tori Kelly was channeling her inner Grace Kelly last night (celeb hairstylist Nikki Providence is to thank) when she took to the Emmys stage in soft-looking yet tightly-curled hair. In the 1950s, hair was being experimented with in all kinds of ways: From perms to page boy cuts, women of all ages we're wearing the same styles.
1960s
In the 1960s, women of all races embraced the Natural Hair Movement (cue The Beatles, "Let It Be") where it was celebrated and encouraged to play up your hair's natural texture. And though we know Kerry Washington's hair was brought to you by her talented hairstylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew (lots of TSD Hair Extensions were involved), she was still blowing us away with how free-flowing and undone the look felt.
1970s
The year was 1970. The setting: disco fever, the age of hot pants and, of course, Charlie's Angels-inspired hairdos. It was one angel in particular, Jill Munroe (Farrah Fawcett's character), whose flipped-out style quite literally made waves amongst the masses. Fast forward to current day, and we were instantly reminded of the starlet's carefree sex-kitten vibes when America Ferrera sported a sultry version on the Emmys red carpet—done by celeb hairstylist Lona Vigi.
1980s
The bigger the hair, the better in the 1980s—it was all about embracing your inner rocker chick. Though Alia Shawkat and hairstylist Terri Walker chose to forgo the scrunchies and giant bangs (we think that was a good call), they nailed it when they embraced her natural texture and kept the curls sky-high away from her face.
1990s
Made famous by the 1990s was "The Rachel," a cut popularized by Jennifer Aniston's Friends character, Rachel Green. It meant shaggy cuts with lots of volume and soft layers, which brings us to Heidi Klum at last night's Emmys. The model's hairstylist Wendy Iles left her with an asymmetrical part leaving her hair long and straight with lots of texture.
2000s
Last but not least, we're brought into the 2000s by Kristen Bell (and her hairstylist Lorenzo Martin). This one you should all be most familiar with, but if you're in need of a refresher think: Britney Spears-like piecey hair that has a flattering shape without framing the face too harshly—like one might argue the ‘90s did.
Whoever said time traveling was impossible, clearly wasn't anywhere near the red carpet last night. We rest our case.
