The Bourne star is not as sly as he may seem on screen

Matt Damon may play a CIA assassin on the silver screen, but he isn't so sly in real life.

The actor faced off against The Tonight Show's host, Jimmy Fallon, for a late-night tradition—the Box of Lies game. Each player must take a turn selecting a numbered box containing a concealed item, show it secretly to the audience and then tell the other player what it "is." In an effort to mislead their opponent, the player can either lie about what the item is or tell the truth. Either way, the other player must decide correctly whether or not their opponent is indeed fibbing. It's a mind game of the tallest order. Not that difficult for a faux spy, right? Wrong.

The Academy Award winner took the first turn, selecting a bonsai tree covered with gnomes. However, the object wasn't odd enough for the Bourne star, so he decided to go off the cuff. "It's a slinky with some kind of phallic symbol on it. It's actually a nose on a slinky, so I guess they're trying to say its a Pinocchio slinky. It's a lying slinky."

However, it wasn't enough verbal gymnastics to fool the host, who's become a bonafide expert in his time playing this game. "You lie!" Fallon exclaimed correctly.

Next, it was the comedian's turn. Fallon selected a box containing a see-through piggy bank filled with cocktail shrimp. However, he decided to take the competition to the next level by lying. "People have it in their house, in their office. You can put it on your desk. It's a paperweight of sorts," Fallon described. "It is a hot tub with Luke Skywalker—looks like Luke Skywalker—with Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Could be Justin Bieber. Justin Bieber, Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton in a hot tub."

Unfortunately, Damon couldn't see through the lies despite asking more questions about the made-up object. "Alright, you're telling the truth," he declared wholeheartedly before Fallon revealed the container full of shrimp.

"That was a good lie, right?" Fallon said, hysterically laughing. "That was excellent!" Damon replied. "I figured your producers might put Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Justin Bieber in a bathtub together."
