State. Fair. Food.
Honestly, the menu items they offer at state fairs should probably be its own food group. There's just no place on the food pyramid for stuff that's both fried and covered in cheese and stuffed with bacon. Let's make a new section of the food pyramid for state fair food and call it "'merica!"
One of the most infamous state fair menus comes from the Minnesota State Fair, and their recently announced lineup is everything you want when it comes to this type of cuisine. If everything you want is indeed dipped in grease and topped with edible heart attack garnishes. Hey, we're not here to judge. We're just here to show you the photos and hope you don't get heartburn through the computer screen.
You can see their full tasty menu at their website, but here are a few of our favorites:
1. Candied Bacon Donut Sliders
Description: Sliced glazed donut holes with thick candied bacon and a chocolate red wine ganache.
2. SPAM® Sushi
Description: Grilled SPAM®, sushi rice, fried egg and wasabi rolled in nori.
3. Deep Fried Nachos Supreme
Description: Pepper jack cheese cubes coated with a mixture of crushed seasoned tortilla chips and nacho cheese, then deep-fried, covered with taco meat, guacamole, more nacho cheese and sour cream, and served with jalapeños on the side.
4. SPAM® Curds
Description: Cheese-flavored SPAM® that has been cubed, battered and deep-fried, served with a side of ranch dressing.
5. Reuben Pickle Dog
Description: A dill pickle spear with sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing wrapped in a slice of corned beef.
6. Deep Fried Grilled Cheese Bites
Description: White cheddar cheese blended with beer batter, cubed and deep-fried for a taste reminiscent of a grilled cheese sandwich. Served with a bloody mary mix marinara.
