Dry, chapped lips will never be in style—it is, unfortunately, quite common.

For coverage that keeps you looking pretty, it's all about color consistency. To protect their clients' lips from the sun during long, outdoor shoots, makeup artists turn to opaque lip products to 1) create an extra barrier and 2) ensure the color stays.

This doesn't mean you have to rely on dark, bold shades (because, who wants to look that dramatic at the beach?) but, rather, thicker formulas. "If you're lying out, stay away from sheer lip products, which barely protect," recommended celeb makeup artist Suzie Kim.

"Use a spatula or small spoon to apply a creamy, opaque lip color and press it onto lips," added the pro. "Roll the spoon like a rolling pin on dough—it presses the color onto the lips and fills in all the crevices better than a brush. Then press on some SPF balm to physically cover lips to protect from sun damage."

The result? A little bit of sheen and whole lot of coverage for your soft, supple lips.
