Mindy Project, Joseph Gordon-Levitt

FOX; Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic

There's a new guy heading to The Mindy Project...and he might be the perfect soul mate for Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling)!

Nope, we're not talking about Danny Castellano (Chris Messina), even though we never thought we'd see the day we were 'shipping Mindy with another guy. But that day has come, and we're feeling no regrets!

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has joined The Mindy Project for Hulu's season four, E! News has confirmed. And get this: he's playing Mindy's new...husband?!

You read that right! Mindy's going to be married to someone who is not Danny Castellano in the season four premiere. Say what?!

Of course, there's a completely logical explanation for this. The premiere is inspired by the 1998 romantic comedy Sliding Doors, and in the alternate-reality version of Mindy's life, she isn't with Danny Castellano, but she's actually married to Matt (Gordon-Levitt), a suave reality show producer for Bravo. And with all due respect to Danny, that's pretty much the perfect man for Mindy.

Our biggest question: What lesson will this alternate timeline show us? Will it prove that no matter their differences, Mindy and Danny actually do belong together? Or will it show that both of their lives would be better off if they broke up?

This isn't the first time that Kaling, Gordon-Levitt and Messina have worked together. The trio actually teamed up last month when The Mindy Project actors guest starred in the season two premiere of Pivot's Hit Record on TV With Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Gordon-Levitt and Messina even tap-danced together in the episode. We swooned. Shenanigans ensued.

And to think, we almost lived in a world where The Mindy Project stayed dead after Fox canceled it. Thank goodness in this alternate reality, Hulu came to the rescue, picking up a 26-episode fourth season of the rom-com which will premiere later this year on the online streaming site.
