Ariana Grande has issued an apology after a video surfaced in which the 22-year-old singer is seen licking doughnuts with her backup dancer and rumored love interest Ricky Alvarez before she is heard saying "I hate Americans. I hate America."
The clip, which was apparently recorded over the weekend at Wolfee Donuts in Lake Elsinore, Calif., immediately generated a great deal of backlash. Today, it was also announced that Demi Lovato will replace the "Love Me Harder" beauty as the headliner of this year's MLB All-Star Game concert.
But, according to Grande, the incidents have no connection, and she wants to set the record straight in addition to saying she's sorry.
"I am EXTREMELY proud to be an American and I've always made it clear that I love my country," the actress began in her lengthy statement. "What I said in a private moment with my friend, who was buying the donuts, was taken out of context and I am sorry for not using more discretion with my choice of words."
She continued, calling herself an "advocate for healthy eating" who hopes to raise awareness about child obesity.
"As an advocate for healthy eating, food is very important to me and I sometimes get upset by how freely we as Americans eat and consume things without giving any thought to the consequences that it has on our health and society as a whole," she said. "The fact that the United States has one of the highest child obesity rates in the world frustrates me. We need to do more to educate ourselves and our children about the dangers of overeating and the poison that we put into our bodies. We need to demand more from our food industry."
She concluded by adding: "However I should have known better in how I expressed myself; and with my new responsibility to others as a public figure I will strive to be better. As for why I cannot be at the MLB show, I have had emergency oral surgery and due to recovery I cannot attend the show. I hope to make it up to all those fans soon. That being said let me once again apologize if I have offended anyone with my poor choice of words."
Meanwhile, Lovato, who recently released her summer anthem "Cool for the Summer" is now gearing up for her performance at the MLB All-Star game, which will take place in Cincinnati and will be broadcast on July 14 on Fox.
"I'm so excited to be headlining the MLB All-Star Concert," said Lovato in the statement. "I hope my fans in Cincinnati are ready to get ‘Cool for the Summer!'"
