Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck needed a pick-me-up, so he picked up a cup of coffee in L.A. Saturday.

It's the first time the actor, 42, has been photographed since returning home from the Bahamas, where he went on a post-breakup vacation with Jennifer Garner, 43, and their three kids: Violet Affleck, 9, Seraphina Affleck, 6, and Samuel Affleck, 3.

When Jennifer flew to Atlanta to begin filming Miracles From Heaven, Ben returned to California with the kids. When he stepped out solo Saturday, the Academy Award winner understandably looked a little worse for wear, sporting messy hair and a graying beard. Ben will likely clean up before he heads to San Diego Comic-Con this Saturday to promote his new blockbuster, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Jennifer, meanwhile, had kept busy with work for the last several months. She spent most of June filming the comedy Nine Lives with Kevin Spacey in Montreal.

Ben and Jennifer announced their breakup last Tuesday.

"After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time," the actors told E! News in a joint statement. "This will be our only comment on this private, family matter. Thank you for understanding."

Shortly after the actors made the announcement, E! News confirmed that the family had flown to the Bahamas, likely to protect themselves from prying eyes.

Why did the couple decide to divorce? "They were a great team as parents, but with each other, they didn't want the same things," a source recently revealed to E! News. "After spending a lot of time figuring that out, they came to the decision that the best thing for them and for the children would be to make a change."

Despite their differences with each other, the kids come first.

"Jen is a great mother and Ben is a great dad," the source told E! News.

According to another insider, the actors had "been living separate lives and preparing for this for a long time." After two years of counseling, though, the two "finally realized that they just couldn't get there."

For the kids' sake, the divorce may not be such a bad thing.

"For better or worse, I tend to be the one who says, 'This is what needs to happen.' I know who wants what lunch, and I've done all the school paperwork and filled out the emergency cards. Ben doesn't even know that stuff exists. He is in charge of laughter," Jennifer told InStyle last year. "No matter how much I tickle them or toss them or chase them around, it's not the same. If I'm the slow, steady drumbeat, he's the jazz." Because of their differing schedules, she added, "I keep things rolling and foster his connection to the kids. He'll always make time for them—he screwed up a week of production to take our daughter to her first day of kindergarten—but there's only so much, practically speaking, that he can do. I make sure that I am facilitating the most meaning for each kid out of whatever time he has."
