Stephen Colbert won't make his debut as the new host of The Late Show until Tuesday, Sept. 8, but we're 99.9 percent sure he's going to crush it. Why? Because even his temporary marquee at The Ed Sullivan Theater is the best thing ever.
While the theater is undergoing renovations for Colbert's big debut, its longtime neighbor, Angelo's Pizza, is not, so CBS decided to have a little fun with its new marquee. Yes, that is Colbert reclining while enjoying a slice of 'za (that's pizza, duh), letting the public know Angelo's is still open during renovations. So aside from pizza-related shenanigans and a new set, what can fans expect from The Late Show with Colbert at the helm, replacing David Letterman after 20 years? Well, that's still TBD.
"He's got almost all of his creative team from The Colbert Report coming to work with him," CBS president Nina Tassler told reporters at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour. "There will be music on the show [and] he certainly will have guests on the show. Whether he starts with an opening monologue, he's working on that right now."
Colbert wrapped up his 10-season run on The Colbert Report with a celebrity-filled finale in December 2014, while Letterman, who had hosted the show since 1993, signed off from The Late Show on May 20.
"Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television," CBS president and CEO Les Moonves said in a statement when Colbert was announced as Letterman's replacement. "David Letterman's legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and today's announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night."
