It was two years ago when Friends co-creator Marta Kaufman told me in no uncertain terms that a reunion of the beloved show was "not happening."
She made it quite clear that it was never going to happen.
Even so, the reunion rumors have continued on an almost daily basis.
So when I caught up with Kaufman last night at the premiere of her new Netflix series Grace and Frankie, I felt it was my duty to make sure nothing had changed since the last time we had talked.
Fans of the show, Kaufman said, "have to let it go. It'll never happen—not happening!"
Listen, people, if Marta Kaufman says it's never going to happen, you really need to let your dreams die.
As she said two years ago, "Friends was about that time in your life when your friends are your family and once you have a family, there's no need anymore."
With the reunion out of the way, let's get to Grace and Frankie. The series follow two frenemies (Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin) whose law partner husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) announce they're in love, have been having an affair for 20 years and plan to get married.
"We were always kind of walking around talking about doing something and suddenly it dropped in our laps," Tomlin said.
"I'm pretty happy about it," Fonda said.
In one hilarious scene, the two trip out on peyote together. It's not the first time they've used drugs together on film. The two, along with Dolly Parton, got stoned together in 9 to 5.
Tomlin and Fonda remembered President Ronald Reagan's response to the now iconic workplace comedy.
"He loved 9 to 5 except that part where we got high on pot," Fonda said. "I'm glad he can't see this one."
Grace and Frankie's 13-episode first season will be available on Netflix on May 8.
The cast also includes June Diane Raphael and Brooklyn Decker as Fonda and Sheen's daughters as well as Ethan Embry and Baron Vaughn as the adopted sons of Tomlin and Waterston.
PS: Don't expect a complete 9 to 5 reunion on the show. Kaufman and Morris said they love the legendary singer, but they have no plans for her to appear on the series if it gets a second season because they think it would be too distracting.
