The boys are back! BBC has released the first image from the upcoming Sherlock special and Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) look…different. See the picture below!

Things started off with a tease of the Sherlock special (what it's currently titled) read-through draft. Then we got the below image and, well, it's glorious. And confusing. But still glorious. When we last saw Sherlock and Watson they did not have mustaches, nor were they dressed in olden times clothes. So…yeah. We have questions.

The top hat. The bowler cap. What the what?!

Anyway, we're getting more Sherlock, so it's great. The special, which will air sometime in 2015, will be followed by a new season of episodes in 2016. Cumberbatch, co-creator Steven Moffat and Freeman all took home Emmys for their work on the series.

As for what's ahead, well, hold on to your top hat, bowler cap or deerstalker, because tragedy is coming. "You can always expect tragedy as well as adventure, that's just how it goes," co-creator Mark Gatiss told RadioTimes.com.

When viewers last saw Cumberbatch as the great detective, he was heading off into exile…until Moriarty (Andrew Scott) suddenly took over every screen in Great Britain asking, "Did you miss me?" You'll recall Moriarty died. Or did he?

"A special, plus a new series of three episodes—it's a record-breaking run! Of course, it's far too early to say what's coming, but we're reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you'd expect..." co-creator Moffat said in a statement when the new episodes were announced.

Next up for Cumberbatch's isThe Imitation Game. Freeman can be seen in The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies this December and will host Saturday Night Live for the first time on Dec. 13 with musical guest Charli XCX.
