Amanda Bynes' Wednesday afternoon of retail therapy didn't go as planned.

The 28-year-old was questioned by security in Barneys New York for wearing a hat taken from a rack in the store, an eyewitness tells E! News.

At this point, Bynes reportedly told security she only put the hat on because paparazzi and fans were following her and she was trying to disguise herself to get away. Barneys' store security officers stayed with the former child star until New York Police Department officers arrived, says an onlooker.

Bynes did not seem upset as the NYPD spoke with her, says an onlooker, nor was she acting outside of the ordinary inside the store. No arrests were made. (E! News has reached out to the NYPD for comment.)

The Hairspray star just arrived back in Manhattan Friday, less than one week after she was arrested on suspicion of a DUI in California on Sept. 28. (She was charged with a misdemeanor, held on $15,000 bail and released the same day.)

Since returning to the Big Apple, Bynes has been spotted walking on the Upper East Side with a band-aid on her face, riding a Citi Bike through Midtown Manhattan and even attending Nylon's It Girl Prom at the Gilded Lily downtown.

She returned to Twitter Tuesday, telling fans she plans to transfer to "NYU or Columbia" after leaving FIDM, where she'd been studying fashion following a nearly six-month rehab stint stemming from her 5150 involuntary psychiatric hold in summer 2013.

Mother Lynn Bynes' temporary conservatorship over the star ended Sept. 10.

"The first signs of problems came days after the conservatorship ended," a source told E! News. Bynes' parents had exchanged greetings since then, but as her dad Rick Bynes told reporters, "She is 28. She does what she wants."

Bynes is currently on three years of probation stemming from her DUI arrest in 2012.
