The diabetic rocker, who was recovering earlier this month after being diagnosed with the flu, dehydration and exhaustion, rolled up his sleeves and joined his bandmates in helping restore Pilger, a Nebraska town that was destroyed after being a hit by twin tornadoes last week.
Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger reportedly took Michaels, his band and crew into the heavily damaged Pilger Middle School for clean up on Monday, and the scene got the star emotional.
"I just got that lump," Michaels said, his hand on his throat, as he looked at the rubble. "Thinking about the children in this town, it takes your breath away."
He continued, "It's one thing to see it on TV. But when you actually get out here, it's completely different. I've never seen anything like this in my life."
Along with lending a hand in picking up the pieces, the former Poison frontman, who took a break from his U.S. tour to help out, signed autographs and offered comfort, hugs and handshakes to volunteers and residents.
The rare twin tornadoes that hit Pilger last week wiped out the town's business district, fire station and ground 40 or 50 homes into rubble, Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger told CNN, adding that as much as three-fourths of the town of 350 people is gone. Two people died during the storm, including a 5 year old, and roughly 16 were critically injured.
