Male Students at California High School Want to Draft Their Prom Dates, NFL Style

Principal of Newport Beach's Corona del Mar High has sent a letter home to parents to try and stop the prom draft

Sounds like these dudes thought prom-posals weren't cool enough for them. Perhaps they think they shouldn't just ask girls to go to prom with them. The girls should feel privileged to be chosen as their prom dates.

Whatever the motive behind this situation, it's terrible.

Last year, the male students at Corona del Mar High in Newport Beach, Calif., had a prom draft, just like the NFL, where they allegedly ranked all the girls based on hotness and then drafted their dates to prom. And this year, they want to do it again, but this time the school is stepping in to put a stop to it.

Principal Kathy Scott reportedly sent letters to parents, warning them about the draft and asking them to strongly discourage students from participating. And apparently school officials can't do anything to really stop it, and as of yet there are no threats to cancel prom altogether.

According to Daily Pilot, the boys pay lots of money in order to get a good draft position, with one student spending $140 just so he could pick a certain girl that he didn't even know.

"It's awkward because he spent a large amount of money to go with someone he doesn't talk to," a Corona student told the site. "And she finds it awkward that he chose her."

All of it is awkward. All of it.

Back in the day, asking someone to prom just meant waiting at their locker until they were done with class. Maybe you have a flower. You ask. They say yes (or no). Now it's via text. Or it's an elaborate (and sometimes cruel) prom-posal. And finally, we have this draft.

So we've gone from: "Will you please go to prom with me?" to: "Hey yo girl! I chose you. Eight pick in the draft! You're welcome."

We'd also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that MTV tried to make Newport Harbor happen.

You will never be Laguna Beach, Newport Harbor! NEVER.
