David Letterman and Stephen Colbert have come together on The Late Show stage.
The soon-to-be Late Show host and soon-to-be retired Late Show host united forces tonight to talk about the big change that everyone's been talking about for the last few weeks. Looking around at the crowded audience (and probably taking it in that this will soon be his audience), a dapper Colbert sat down to chat with the man who is currently in the seat he will be taking over.
"You look right at home," Letterman said approvingly to the Comedy Central star as he sat down to the roars from the crowd.
And it didn't take long before we got a glimpse of the duo's hilarious back-and-forth.
"I'm going to do whatever you have done," Colbert told Letterman, which prompted the host to immediately respond, "No, you don't want to do that."
"Really, no?" Colbert asked. "It seems to have gone pretty well, Dave."
"It's gone…on," Letterman said.
"Well, obviously I'm thrilled and honored to be taking over for you," Colbert exclaimed.
"Well, I'm thrilled as well," Letterman told him. "In a situation like this—Paul and I have been doing this for a long, long time—they could have just as easily hired another boob like me. But they didn't, they hire a guy..."
"They hire a boob like me," Colbert jokingly interjected.
"No, no no no," Letterman began before Colbert continued, "Every boob is like a snowflake, Dave. We're all unique in our own way."
CBS officially announced that Stephen Colbert will be taking over as host of the Late Show when Letterman retires in 2015.
"Stephen has always been a real friend to me," Letterman said in a statement. "I'm very excited for him, and I'm flattered that CBS chose him. I also happen to know they wanted another guy with glasses."
Colbert is set to take over as the Late Show's host in 2015, with his Comedy Central series The Colbert Report, set to end in eight months.
Watch Colbert's entire interview with Letterman tonight at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
