The ex-Fugees frontwoman pleaded guilty to tax evasion charges in a federal court in New Jersey today, admitting she snubbed the IRS of three years' worth of federal income taxes on more than $1.8 million she earned between 2005 and 2007.
Now the 37-year-old Hill now faces potential time in the big house.
Per the Newark Star-Ledger, the singer-songwriter faces up to three years in prison for her crime. Sentencing is set for late November.
And here Hill just wanted to get away from it all.
At least, that's what the mother of six said in a long-winded post on her Tumblr page when she told fans she felt it "necessary to withdraw from society in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of [herself and her family]."'
Alas, ditching the pop-culture mainstream and going "underground" apparently meant failing to pay Uncle Sam his rightful share, so it wasn't long before the government brought the hammer down.
To which Hill's attorney, Nathan Hockman, cried foul, claiming she had been targeted by the feds because of her celebrity.
"There are many people in society who fail to file their taxes on time who only face civil liability," the legal eagle told the paper. "They chose Ms. Hill in particular because of who she was."
Guess he's never heard of Wesley Snipes.
U.S. District Judge Michael Shipp also ordered the "Killing Me Softly" diva to undergo mental health counseling.
A rep for Hill could not be reached for comment.
