Now that directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly have gotten their dream project The Three Stooges out of the way, they're looking to revisit one of their own comedy classics.
The brothers have confirmed plans to shoot a follow-up to 1994's Dumb and Dumber later this year with original stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels getting stupid again in the roles they made famous—as BFFs Harry and Lloyd.
Just when we thought it couldn't get any dumber…
"We're getting set to shoot Dumb and Dumber 2 in September," Peter Farrelly told ComingSoon.net at the Stooges press junket on Sunday. "It's the first sequel we've ever done and we've got Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back."
The filmmaker added that not only do they have a script in the works from screenwriting duo Sean Anders and John Morris (Hot Tub Time Machine, Mr. Popper's Penguins), but that this will be a far cry from 2003's Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, a ho-hum prequel that chronicled Harry and Lloyd's travails in high school—a film he and his sibling were not involved in, nor were Carrey and Daniels.
"We did not do Dumb and Dumberer," Farrelly noted. "That was a studio thing. So we've always wanted to do a sequel and finally Jim called up. Jeff always wanted to do it. We always wanted to do it. Jim was busy, but he called and said, 'We've got to do this thing again.' He had just watched Dumb and Dumber and he said, 'This is the perfect sequel. Let's do it.'"
The funnyman's last stab at slapstick, Mr. Popper's Penguins, took in $187 million at the worldwide box office, so clearly there's an audience still psyched to see Carrey fall all over making a fool of himself (though we can't say if former crush Emma Stone feels the same).
Daniels, meanwhile, next stars on the small screen in a slightly more intelligent role as an outspoken TV anchor in Aaron Sorkin's HBO drama The Newsroom.
