Gisele Bündchen's Half-Naked TV Ad: Sexy or Sexist?

Brazilian government agency calling for removal of lingerie commercial featuring supermodel

There are actually people who don't want to see Gisele Bündchen half-naked?!

As crazy as it might sound, it's true.

A Brazilian government agency says it wants a TV ad—which stars one of Hollywood's hottest moms shilling Hope lingerie—to be taken off the air, but it's not because they think the Victoria's Secret angel is too sexy for Brazil, they think the ad is sexist.

So who exactly is behind this and what's their reasoning?

The Women's Rights Secretariat said in a statement today that it has asked the National Advertising Council to suspend the ad, saying it reinforces stereotypes of women as sex objects.

If you've already watched the clip above, you might have realized that Bündchen was speaking a different language (unless you were just staring and drooling too much to notice), so here's what was going on:

The Hope ad first shows Bündchen dressed in a sophisticated sheath and then—poof!—she's in her bra and undies telling her hubby that she crashed the car and exceeded her credit card limit.

The Brazilian lingerie maker wanted to show that a "Brazilian woman's sensuality is her best protection when delivering bad news."

They've got a point. Gisele got out of that speeding ticket, remember?

UPDATE Sept. 30, 2011: Gabriela Bündchen, Gisele's sister and a member of her management team told E! News that the supermodel has no plans to issue a formal statement on the incident, but that they want to "assure" fans "that not any moment we thought people could get offended by the ads. The advertising campaign's proposal was presented to us and we considered it as a satire, a joke. We regret that something that was supposed to be fun ended up having another interpretation."
