Michael Phelps and (Former) Miss California: Are Things Going Swimmingly?

Olympic gold medalist steps out in support of his on-again/off-again girlfriend, Miss California 2010

Michael Phelps found himself wading in familiar waters this weekend.

Just days after being linked to Kim Kardashian pal Brittny Gastineau, the Olympic swimmer was spotted in Palm Springs to support his longtime girlfriend, Miss California 2010 Nicole Johnson, as she handed over the reigns to a new pageant queen. 

"I'm here for one reason and one reason only," Michael told E! News. "Nicole."

The gold medalist decided to take a break from training for the upcoming 2012 Summer Olympics to escort Nicole to all her pageant responsibilities.

"Michael is here supporting me and my family and it feels great," Nicole said. "It's been great. I love having their support. They have all backed me in everything I've done."  

The couple, Michael pointed out, has been on and off for the past three years.

Guess this was one of their "on" moments.
