Perhaps Jessica Simpson's family shouldn't worry whether her fiancé has "nothing going on" or not.

"Eric comes from a really wealthy family in Massachusetts, and he's an only child," a close friend of Eric Johnson, the retired football pro planning to become the next Mr. Jessica Simpson, exclusively tells E! News.

"He doesn't have to worry about money. He's not Jessica Simpson-rich, but he's well-off."

And refreshingly down-to-earth, so it sounds.

"Eric's really not the Hollywood type," the friend says. "He's more of a homebody than anything. He only moved to Los Angeles because his ex-wife wanted to pursue acting and design."

Johnson's divorce from his wife of five years, Keri, was finalized last month. She filed for the split in October 2009.

"He's a really smart guy," the friend says. "He was planning on going back to business school and then he just randomly met Jessica and fell in love."

Which is what really matters, right?

"Eric seemed really happy," said another source who saw the betrothed pair at a wedding recently. "They are totally a legitimate couple and totally in love."

And Johnson's probably got a prenup in his future no matter what his bank statement says.
