Is work getting in the way of marital bliss for Green Lantern star Ryan Reynolds?
For his 2011 superhero debut as the DC Comics hero Green Lantern, Reynolds has been living and breathing all things Hal Jordan for the past several months-but he's married to Marvel superheroine Scarlett Johansson!
"We've had some strongly worded dinners," Reynolds admitted to the standing room-only crowd Saturday at Comic-Con.
But don't worry, folks! The A-list newlyweds manage to keep the peace. "We've probably got a lot more comic books lying around than your average married couple," Reynolds added.
He had plenty more, scoop, too, and so did a surprise Harry Potter guest:
Reynolds and cast mates Blake Lively, Mark Strong, Peter Sarsgaard joined director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) to present the very first look at Green Lantern, which tells the story of a man chosen to join an intergalactic police force, powered by a magical ring.
At one point, the charismatic actor melted the entire room during a sweet exchange with a pint-sized fan, who asked him to recite the Green Lantern oath. Reynolds complied, delivering the trademark incantation with grave seriousness as a hush fell over the hall. Afterwards, he raised his ring in salute to the young fan before giving away the ring off his finger to a lucky attendee, promising them that "this means we're married, but in space."
Though fans didn't get a closer look at the CG costume Reynolds wears in the film-Campbell describes it as a "second skin," while we like to envision Reynolds shooting scenes against a green screen in the buff-Green Lantern fans got plenty of tasty tidbits to chew on, including:
• Reynolds, explaining why he loves the character, teased a Green Lantern trilogy: "He could throw a punch, tell a joke, and kiss the girl. I couldn't figure out who wouldn't want to play that for a movie...or maybe two or three." If Green Lantern is a success, DC is likely to move forward on a Justice League film, ZOMG!
• Fans can expect to see ALL of the members of the Green Lantern Corps when the story moves into outer space, into the center of the universe. Familiar characters Kilowogg and Parallax will show up, among others.
• If Reynolds were to dress up for Comic-Con, he'd be a Wookiee, "because I like to be cute and dangerous." Blake Lively would dress up as Harry Potter!
• The brief but well-received Green Lantern teaser footage shown opened on a green orb against a black screen, undulating as Mark Strong's Sinestro initiates the viewer into the Green Lantern Corps—which fans, of course, recognize as Hal Jordan's point of view. What followed were snatches of scenes from the film, briefly showing the alien characters and villains of Green Lantern (including Sarsgaard as Dr. Hector Hammond) giving a glimpse of Ryan Reynolds as the newbie Green Lantern Corps recruit, using his ring for the first time to knock out a handful of thugs with a green energy blast.
But the excitement wasn't yet over for the 7,000-strong fans in attendance, who were then treated to an extended footage reel from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1-presented by special surprise guest Tom Felton!
The Brit actor, who's played baddie Draco Malfoy since he was 12 years old, came out amid ear-shattering screams from the Potter fans in the audience-many of whom had camped out overnight for a prime spot in line.
Thanking the fans on behalf of his absentee cast-mates, Felton couldn't resist embarrassing pal Daniel Radcliffe, telling the entire geekfest how, after filming finished on the very last Harry Potter film in the long-running franchise, "Dan cried like a girl."
The extended Deathly Hallows reel that played in Hall H didn't disappoint, garnering a huge reaction from the Potterites in the house.
Action scenes abounded, creating the palpable sense that this is the film that marks the beginning of the end: Voldemort and his army (including Snape) planning a deadly attack on Harry, Harry and his BFFs coming to blows over the growing wizarding war, even Hagrid flying high in the skies leaving a blazing trail of fire in his wake as good and evil takes flight for a massive, swirling aerial battle.
Felton was even impressed, watching the footage for the first time.
Stay tuned for Avengers news and more surprise guests as Comic-Con's biggest day of geekery continues!
