Man Indicted in American Idol Death

New Jersey man accused of running down Idol hopeful Alexis Cohen is facing the music

Unlike Idol, there are no winners here.

A New Jersey man has been charged in last summer's tragic hit-and-run death of former American Idol hopeful Alexis Cohen.

Per the Asbury Park Press, an Ocean County grand jury indicted Daniel Bark on four counts—aggravated manslaughter, death by auto, eluding police and knowingly leaving the scene of an accident—for his role in the July 25, 2009, accident that claimed the life of the aspiring popster.

The indictment came down last Thursday.

Prosecutors say the 24-year-old Bark was fleeing cops after an earlier accident when he fatally struck the 25-year-old Cohen as she was crossing in the street in Seaside Heights. The Idol castoff suffered major chest, abdominal and closed head injuries and died at the scene. Bark was collared the next day on a DUI and further investigation tied him to the hit-and-run.

Cohen twice tried out for American Idol in the show's seventh and eighth seasons but failed to go anywhere. But her memorable confrontation with Simon Cowell in the seventh season, in which she launched into an angry bird-flipping tirade after he likened her to a Spider-Man villain, earned her viral video immortality.

Bark remains behind bars on $150,000 bail. If found guilty of just the aggravated manslaughter charge, he could get anywhere from 10 to 30 years in prison.
