Sure, it's sappier than a truckload of fresh-cut maples, but this lovefest actually keeps you guessing whether these two protagonists can live happily ever after. Penn is absolutely charming as a Windy City newspaper researcher who yearns for Costner, a yokel who isn't sure how to grieve for a lost love. And Newman is terrific as Costner's dad, always offering his opinion whether it's wanted or not.
Four years after the Waterworld debacle, Costner gamely returns to the ocean--and stays afloat this time. Having the lovely Penn on board rather than a deranged Dennis Hopper makes the voyage that much smoother.
