Brooding hunk Ari (Dimitriades) has problems. He's the son of Greek immigrants who've settled in Melbourne, Australia. He's alienated from his parents and their traditional mores. He can't connect with his friends. And he's gay and in the closet. The prevailing macho ethos of his close-knit community dictates that homosexuals be scorned. As Ari succinctly puts it, "I'm sliding to the sewer and I can already smell the shit.
" Drugs, sadistic cops, scorned drag queens and angry sex acts proliferate in Ari's world of unrelieved nihilism. Although Head On has a certain rude power, it's definitely not a date flick.
