Here's lookin' at you, J.Lo. The pop diva-actress is surprisingly credible here as a wisecracking Chicago cop who takes guff from nobody. One day, though, she almost takes a bullet in the head from a street thug--but is suddenly rescued by the mysterious James Caviezel. A harmlessly creepy guy who likes wearing a dark trench coat, Caviezel has a sketchy past and an unfurnished apartment.
But Lo's love don't cost a thing, so they strike up a nervous romance, which eventually forces each of them to confront their painful secrets. The script takes its sweet ol' time unfolding and manages to mix middle-class humor with tear-jerking scenes. But if the title or trailers have led you (like us) to expect some sort of metaphysical surprise ending, well--surprise!--there ain't one! This okay love story is too dependent on the good looks of Lopez and Caviezel. So, even though it's easy on the eyes, this Angels's far from heavenly.
