Out of Sight director Steven Soderbergh is still outta sight these days. In the midst of an expected Oscar push(-up) for his Erin Brockovich, he has reached a different kind of moviemaking high with Traffic. Three interrelated stories about the personal and global stakes of drug trafficking are twisted tightly by Stephen Gaghan's smart script, and Soderbergh goes for realism with his camera and cast--and gets it right.
In fact, Catherine Zeta-Jones sports a convincing Welsh accent and really looks pregnant! (Okay, okay, so that was already built in.) She and newlywed hubby Michael Douglas (married to others in the film) stand out in this powerful ensemble, as do the remarkable Benicio Del Toro and cutup Luis Guzmán. Despite the two-hour-plus running time, this film's cast keeps it captivating. What a deal.
