Rape, murder and mayhem are all the rage in this powerful adaptation of Shakespeare's bloodiest epic. The film directing debut of Taymor, who directed the Tony Award-winning The Lion King, is not without its flaws, but rarely has such a full-bodied extravaganza hit the screen. Soaked with invention, the film jumbles time and space, uses larger-than-life cinematography and dream-like visualizations of text.
The cast is amazing. Standouts include Cumming as a vicious emperor (with a killer wardrobe); Lange as the virulent, sexy Queen of the Goths; and Hopkins, chewing scenery like Hannibal Lector chews on diners, as a titanic Titus.
