How the 2017 SAG Awards Nominations Were Everything the Golden Globes Snubbed

What didn't get honored by the HFPA will be lauded by SAG-AFTRA

When the 2017 Golden Globes Awards nominations were announced Monday, many immediately noticed the amount of snubs and surprises there were. E! News argued that in addition to there being too much TV to nominate everyone, it's also difficult to make the cut when iconic movie stars are successfully transitioning into TV.

But then the 2017 SAG Awards nominees were announced Wednesday, and it became immediately clear that what the Hollywood Foreign Press Association lacked at the Golden Globes would be made up for by SAG-AFTRA at the SAG Awards. What was snubbed by the HFPA was honored by the SAG Awards, although there are some shows still being honored that we thought were out of the running by now—looking at you, Downton Abbey

SAG Awards 2017: Notable Nominees

Although Stranger Things received nods for Winona Ryder's performance and Best Television Series, Drama, during the Golden Globes nominations, none of the other stars were honored. The SAG Awards, however, nominated breakout star Millie Bobby Brown, Ryder and the cast for Best Ensemble in a Drama Series. Victory for the cutest cast alive!

Fans of NBC's breakout hit This Is Us were surprised when the men of the cast didn't receive any accolades. But then the SAG Awards swooped in and threw Sterling K. Brown a nomination for his portrayal on Randall (in addition to his nomination for The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story). The SAG Awards heard fans' cries and responded accordingly.

Game of Thrones, a fan-favorite and awards show favorite, too, typically pulls in an incredible number of nominations. This year, however, the Golden Globes held back. Lena Headey was the only cast member to get an individual nomination, but the show did get honored in the Best Television Series, Drama, category. Once again, the SAG Awards came through and threw Peter Dinklage a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series. Tyrion Lannister should never be overlooked.

Perhaps most surprising was the fact that House of Cards, a two-time Golden Globes winner, received zero nominations this year. Neither Kevin Spacey nor Robin Wright secured recognition this year, but both stars received nominations at the forthcoming SAG Awards.

Although The Girl on the Train received mixed reviews, most critics praised Emily Blunt's performance—but not the HFPA. SAG-AFTRA, however, felt differently and nominated Blunt in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture category. Congratulations, Emily!

The Golden Globes also failed to recognize Black Mirror and its cast in any categories, but SAG-AFTRA nominated Bryce Dallas Howard for her striking role as a woman obsessed with social media.

And even though Grace and Frankie had been honored in the past by the HFPA, it decided against the cute Netflix series. But like every other TV show, movie and actor mentioned in this piece, the SAG Awards nominated both Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.
