Just a day after the actor revealed to GQ Australia that a former girlfriend of his died in a tragic car accident, Eastwood called his late ex's father to apologize for never reaching out in the two years that passed since her death. Alexander Brangman, the father of aspiring model Jewel Brangman, who died at the hands of a faulty airbag, spoke to People magazine about the emotional conversation they shared.
"[Scott] said, 'I didn't reach out because I didn't know what to say,'" Brangman said. "He was very apologetic."
At the time of his daughter's death, Brangman said he was "hurt" by Eastwood's decision to never offer his condolences, explaining, "I was disappointed he didn't come to her celebration of life. Many people were actually disappointed. Many of her friends flew across the country to pay their respects and condolences. There wasn't even a flower sent."
And although Brangman revealed Eastwood never asked for his consent to speak publicly on the accident, admitting, "I don't think he handled the situation properly," the 61-year-old has come to a better understanding of Eastwood's intentions.
"I was angry—but everybody grieves differently," Brangman continued. "You know, he's a kid, too. I didn't know what his grieving process is—I'd like to get to know more of what he went through. Because that's a difficult thing."
According to Brangman, Scott and Jewel split six to nine months before her 2014 death. Jewel's father filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Honda, the airbag manufacturer and the rental company of the 2001 Honda Civic she was driving. The 26-year-old was one of 11 people who were killed by the since-recalled airbags.
In his GQ interview Eastwood told the magaine, "I've lost friends before; I've lost some great friends. But, I had never lost someone I had been really intimate with. Maybe it's made it harder for me to date."
