If you feel bad/sad/lonely that you aren't currently with a boo, you have a good reason to be thankful for your situation. It's tough when you're feelin' the single blues, and you have to scroll through Facebook post after Facebook post of sappy engagement photos (you know the ones by a tree or against a brick wall), wedding snaps and the never ending declarations of love between two people in a very public Facebook relationship. Honestly, how many selfies does the world need to see of a couple who can't keep their hands to themselves? Such a stab to the heart. Don't give up hope though. Being single just got a little bit better. Let's explain why.

We all know that everything on social media isn't always as it seems. Relationships are included in that statement. Apparently, New York Magazine says there is a scientific reason those in-your-face couples exist, and it doesn't sound good. It turns out, those ooey-gooey couples that gush all over your Facebook feed may experience "Relationship Contingency Self-Esteem." It's an unhealthy type of self-esteem that comes out of a romantic relationship. People who experience high social anxiety and low self-esteem are often the ones who post these types of corny status updates and googly-eyed couples pix. Believe it or not, it's actually very common for introverts and people who want to exaggerate the state of their actual life.

However, as painful as this might be for a single person to hear, a lot of times, these couples are just plain happy. No fancy scientific reason other than good old love. If that makes you sick to your stomach, don't worry. We promise your true love will come to you soon and (hopefully) won't exhibit any of those negative characteristics. You got this!
