Law & Order: SVU Taking on Making a Murderer in Season 18

Henry Thomas and Kelli Williams will guest star

It wouldn't be a new season of Law & Order: SVU without a ripped from the headlines story to kick things off and this time they're taking on Making a Murderer. Is the internet ready for this?

E! News has confirmed Henry Thomas, yes Elliot from E.T., will appear alongside Kelli Williams in an episode about a convicted rapist who is exonerated after DNA is freshly tested. Ice T's character, Fin, originally arrested Thomas' character 16 years earlier and then begins investigating him again when he's linked to a deadly crime. Williams will play Melanie, a rape victim who initially identified Thomas' character.

Look for the episode to air this fall. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the casting news.

Law & Order: SVU is no stranger to taking on ripped from the headlines stories. Last year the show featured a Robert Durst-y case, an episode with a Duggar-like family and scandal and a storyline similar to Bill Cosby's sexual assault allegations.

Netflix's Making a Murderer captivating audiences with its stale of Steven Avery, who was arrested and wrongfully convicted of a brutal sexual assault. He spent years in prison before getting released and ultimately put back behind bars for the murder of Teresa Halbach shortly after his release. His new appeals will be chronicled in another batch of episodes for Netflix.

"Because of [Laura] Ricciardi's and [Moira] Demos' incredible vision, commitment and keen eye, audiences around the globe became completely captivated by the personal stories of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey and the unique lens their experiences provide into the criminal justice system," Lisa Nishimura, vice president of original documentary programming at Netflix, said in a statement. "We're thrilled to be continuing our longstanding relationship with the filmmakers, and look forward to giving our global viewers eagerly anticipated updates on this story."

Law & Order: SVU returns Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. on NBC.
