Kanye West debuted his highly anticipated, years-in-the-making new studio album Thursday, and he pretty much instantaneously lost a bunch of fans after he played the song "Famous."
In the new track Kanye throws Taylor Swift some serious shade, and if there's one thing we've all learned about celebrities it's that you don't insult T.Swift because her squad is going to come after you. And it did. "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous," the rapper, 38, bragged in the song.
Taylor's younger brother, Austin Swift, immediately posted a video on Instagram of him throwing away his Yeezys, while Gigi Hadid, who attended the Yeezy Season 3 show at Madison Square Garden, tweeted her support for her BFF. "My attendance somewhere does not mean I agree with everything being said in the music playing there," she wrote. "My friends know of my loyalty."
Now it seems Orange Is the New Black actress Ruby Rose is #TeamSwift, as she also turned to social media to not only defend the "Style" singer but also drag Kanye through the digital mud.
"Too many lines crossed. If I put myself in the shoes of the women he has hurt recently. Victims of Bill Cosby, The Slut shaming, Amber," she wrote, referencing Kanye's tweet claiming Cosby is "innocent" and his past comments about ex Amber Rose.
"And now my dear friend Taylor.. Right before another huge moment for her.. Can I still support him and call myself a feminist? A friend? No."
The "huge moment" Ruby is referring to is the 2016 Grammys coming up on Monday. Taylor is nominated for seven awards, including Album of the Year, for 1989. Kanye is up for a few awards himself, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens come Monday, should anything happen at all. Will there be another 2009 MTV VMA's moment where he storms the stage? Or are these two going to work it out off camera?
TMZ reported that Kanye had informed Taylor of the controversial lyrics prior to recording and received her blessing, but the "Out of the Woods" singer's rep told E! News that wasn't true. "Kanye did not call for approval, but to ask Taylor to release his single 'Famous' on her Twitter account. She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message," her rep told us in a statement Thursday night. "Taylor was never made aware of the actual lyric, 'I made that bitch famous.'"
But Kanye begs to differ.
