All season long, The Vampire Diaries has been flashing forward three years to a future that looks verrrrrry different than the present-day Mystic Falls we're used to. And now, the show has finally connected a few dots for us.

First things first: We finally saw Matt Donovan in the future (PHEW, HE'S ALIVE! And he was the first one Damon went to save when he realized he'd accidentally almost killed him while getting out of the Phoenix Stone), but it turns out that he's working with the ultra-scary Huntress who's after Stefan as revenge after losing his family and girlfriend.

Girlfriend is totally the police chick who pulled him over for drinking and texting while driving, right? Oh, and the reason Future Caroline was kidnapped? Because she's the easiest way to get to Stefan. Hmmmmm.

Speaking of the Huntress, we found out why she's after so many people we love: They've been marked by her sword, a.k.a. the weapon that puts people in the Phoenix Stone. The Heretics are terrified of her, so you know she's a legit horrible threat.

Second future development: Now we know why Caroline and Alaric are in Dallas in the future—he's been offered a job at SMU. And we can see more of why they end up together—the babies, obviously. Caroline knows she's just a surrogate, but she can't help feel protective of the little bodies forming inside of her.

Third big development: Um, was that thing with Elena's body real?! Both Stefan and Damon are still reeling from the effects of being trapped in hell, and it's causing them to hallucinate and do horrible things. Damon's worst offense? Possibly smashing Tyler's skull into the ground and burning Elena's body. NO BIG DEAL! Oh wait, HUGE deal. Thanks for leaving us hanging on that note, TVD!

Are you happy we finally got some answers (and are you worried for Tyler and Elena)?! Leave your thoughts in the comments below!

The Vampire Diaries airs Fridays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
