The musicians, who were briefly an item in 2014, reunited at the American Airlines Center in Dallas Tuesday. They performed at 106.1 KISS FM's Jingle Ball 2015, presented by Capital One. Goulding, 28, and Horan, 22, were all smiles while embracing and posing for a photo backstage. In addition to Goulding and One Direction, 5 Seconds of Summer, DNCE, Calvin Harris, Tove Lo, Demi Lovato, Shawn Mendes (with Camila Cabello), Charlie Puth and Zedd also took the stage.
The pop stars' reunion comes amid unconfirmed reports that Goulding and boyfriend Dougie Poynter are "taking a break." The Mirror reported Tuesday that the couple "hit a rough patch" because "their work commitments have meant they have been spending more and more time away from each other and it has made it difficult to maintain their relationship." Neither Goulding nor McFly's Poynter have commented on reports that they are "taking a break," however.
Which brings us back to Horan.
Last year, Ed Sheeran implied in several interviews that his song "Don't" was about Horan swooping in and stealing Goulding from him. Sheeran later insisted that he "never actually confirmed" the love triangle rumors, despite the press running wild with the story. In a 2013 radio interview, however, Sheeran revealed that he'd enjoyed a brief romance with Goulding.
In June 2015, Goulding shared her side of the story with Elle U.K. "I did go on a few dates with Niall but I was never in a relationship with Ed," the "On My mind" singer told the magazine. "I have absolutely no idea where that came from and why it was turned into such a big thing."
"I find it so frustrating that female musicians are constantly defined by the men they have or haven't dated. It's something I've talked about with [Taylor Swift] a lot. She definitely feels that. She gets bothered by it. It's like, you can be a great artist, you can write great songs, but the thing that everyone is going to talk about is some relationship they think you have had or not had. It's definitely something we both think happens to female artists over male artists."
