Jennifer Lawrence doesn't smile much in Joy.
Perhaps that's the point, though. The first trailer for the actress' third project with filmmaker David O. Russell was released Wednesday, with Lawrence starring as the titular character. The usual players are back—in addition to Lawrence, American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook actors Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro return—and are joined by new faces, like Orange Is the New Black actress Dascha Polanco. Diane Ladd, Virginia Madsen, Édgar Ramírez, Elisabeth Röhm and Isabella Rossellini also appear in the biographical comedy-drama.
Russell co-wrote the script with Bridesmaids' Annie Mumolo.
According to 20th Century Fox's press release, "Joy is the wild story of a family across four generations centered on the girl who becomes the woman who founds a business dynasty and becomes a matriarch in her own right. Betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and the scars of love pave the road in this intense emotional and human comedy about becoming a true boss of family and enterprise facing a world of unforgiving commerce. Allies become adversaries and adversaries become allies, both inside and outside the family, as Joy's inner life and fierce imagination carry her through the storm she faces."
Lawrence, of course, plays Joy Mangano, a struggling single mom of three children who invented the Miracle Mop and is the President of Ingenious Designs, LLC.
