Tom Cruise and Paramount Pictures are taking a step back following the horrific shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., that left 28 people dead, 20 of them children.

"Due to the terrible tragedy...and out of honor and respect for the families of the victims whose lives were senselessly taken, we are postponing tomorrow's Pittsburgh premiere of Jack Reacher," Paramount said in a statement obtained by E! News. "Our hearts go out to all those who lost loved ones."

The action film, starring Cruise as a loner detective with exceptional smarts and physical acumen, has already enjoyed premieres in London and Stockholm. Jack Reacher was shot in Pittsburgh, hence its selection as the locale for its U.S. premiere.

Paramount's sentiments echo those of much of the rest of the country, not least of which the corner of Hollywood that regularly takes to Twitter to join the national conversation.

Earlier today, Syfy pulled a new episode of Haven from its prime-time lineup because it featured violence set in a high school.

Jack Reacher, which also stars Rosamund Pike and Richard Jenkins, hits theaters Dec. 21.
