Happy Golden Globes nomination day! This morning brought much more excitement after yesterday's SAG Awards. And by excitement, we mean downright criminal snubs and very, very strange nods given out:
The Good:
Connie Britton's Nashville Nom: Mrs. Coach! We always love to see you get the love during award season, even if it's for a character other than Tami Taylor. We're learning to let go of Friday Night Lights, we promise.
Benedict Cumberbatch: If you are one of those people who don't "get" the appeal of Mr. Cumberbatch, you really, really need to watch the BBC series Sherlock. It only takes one episode, and you'll finally understand why people love him. He's electric onscreen…that's the only way to describe it. And obviously the HFPA loves him, too, since they gave him a nod in the Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie category.
Breaking Bad: Welcome to the Golden Globes drama category, Breaking Bad! It's nice to finally see you after consistently being one of the best shows on television. Let's hope this first time nomination for Drama Series is not your last.
Max Greenfield: Because the Golden Globes (lamely) lumps both drama and comedy together in the supporting categories, it's a very, very tight category to slip into. As expected, Homeland and Modern Family were represented, but lo and behold, New Girl's Greenfield wiggled his way in to take his rightful spot in the category. Not too surprising given his Emmy nomination, but he had to beat out other comedic and dramatic actors. Go Schmidt!
The Bad:
Drama Snubs: We're going to list some of the best drams on television for you, OK? Mad Men, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, American Horror Story and Sons of Anarchy. Now how would you react if we told you that these shows got nothing, zero, zilch this morning, save for Jessica Lange and Jon Hamm's nods in the acting categories? Surprised? Pissed off? Annoyed? We are feeling a kaleidoscope of emotions regarding these blatant snubs, and none of them are good.
Comedy Snubs: OK, now we are going to list some of the best comedies on television. Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, Happy Endings and New Girl. Once again, save for some acting nods, these shows came away with a bag full of nothing from the HFPA. Love seeing cohosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in the same category, though. It will make for some interesting antics come the big night.
No Love for Sherlock: Hey, remember when we talked about how awesome Cumberbatch is on Sherlock? You'd think that the show would be nominated in the Miniseries category. It's been nominated for an Emmy the past two years, so this one was weird. And bad. Very, very bad. You know what else is bad? Martin Freeman getting shut out as well. Who wasn't in tears when he had a talk with (spoiler alert!) Sherlock's grave at the end of "The Reichenbach Fall?" Poor little Hobbit.
The What?!
Smash: You guys know we love Smash as much as the next person, but really?! The first season was uneven at best, with only the pilot and the season finale showing its true potential, and it was nominated in the Best Comedy or Musical category? Over shows like Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock and New Girl? Did the HFPA forget about Leo?!
Julie Bowen Snubbed Again: We were side-eyeing the SAG for not including Emmy winners Julie Bowen and Julia Louis-Dreyfus yesterday, but now we're wondering if there is a conspiracy against Bowen. Dreyfus nabbed a spot in the lead comedy acting category, but Bowen's supporting spot assumedly went to Sofia Vegara (again). Because of the drama and comedy people being shoved together in the supporting category, it's a rough one to break into, but we assumed the Emmy winner would get the nod considering Vegara has been nominated the past two years. Nope.
Hayden Panettiere: What?! Granted, she's great in her role as the scheming and bitch Juliette Barnes on Nasvhille, but better than someone like Homeland's Morena Baccarin? Or Boardwalk Empire's Kelly Macdonald? We are speechless.
